Winning the Lottery
In the world of nonprofits, I would say that on Friday, we hit the nonprofit lottery with the great press given us by People magazine! To be the focus of their "Heroes Among Us" page is amusing, a little embarrassing, funny, yet encouraging at the same time. When you are in this business you recognize that there are so many heroes among us in our communities that need to be applauded, respected, and supported! Some of us "grassroots" people who start a movement do so because of a life-changing experience. That's the story and history of the Kelly Anne Dolan Memorial Fund. Please read it within this website.
I have been a messenger of the needs of families with seriously ill and physically or cognitively compromised children because of what my late husband and I witnessed so many times and for so many years when our daughters were sick and hospitalized. Those individuals who heard the message and have offered to help, even though they never had the experience our family has had, are my heroes! I work with them daily. They serve on our Board, our committees, our fundraisers, here in the office, and throughout our community.
We are approaching our 34th anniversary. After all these years of caring for more than 18,000 families, we are thrilled that so many more will learn of the needs that exist when a family receives the serious diagnosis of one or more children, thanks to the article in People. We take care of the side-effects of severe and catastrophic illness within the family unit. We need your help because they need ours.
When I was told that the circulation of People magazine is 46 million, I suddenly recognized that I was at the "watch what you wish for" point of no return! We are beyond grateful to our good friend Abby Sandler, for starting the ball rolling, and for the sensitivity, commitment, and persistence of Sandra Sobieraj Westfall, Washington Correspondent, for skillfully condensing a five-hour interview into 120 words!
